Jack’s Journey: Inconsistent Gym Habits to a Passion for Fitness

Struggling with being consistent is something many of us can relate to. For years, Jack’s relationship with fitness was a cycle of highs and lows: inconsistent gym habits, poor nutrition, and pain from a sedentary lifestyle. He loved the idea of being active but struggled to stay consistent and motivated. Since joining Body + Soul Fitness in 2022, with the help of his personal trainer, Jack was able to find structure, support and tools he needed to not only crush his consistency goals but rebuild his relationship with health and fitness.  

“I started feeling better and better each week, each month.” Jack states, “As I physically feel better, I have bigger goals, I want to achieve more, I want to feel even better.” 

About Jack

Fitness has always been a part of Jack’s life. Growing up an athlete and training in the gym with the hopes of improving his athletic performance, Jack knows how an active lifestyle makes him feel.  What he struggled with was consistency. He had a hard time motivating himself to continue going to the gym and wasn’t paying much attention to his eating habits, as he lacked knowledge about nutrition. As he reached his mid-20s, Jack realized how his body responds to a lack of activity. Aches and pain became much more prevalent, including significant upper back pain from working a sedentary desk job.  

After trying a few gyms, but not feeling totally comfortable, Jack joined Body + Soul Fitness in 2022.  

The Challenge

After years of struggling with consistency, Jack decided it was time to make a change.   He knew that working with a trainer would provide him with the structure, accountability, and expertise he needed to take meaningful steps toward improving his health. A trainer could help him create specific, actionable plans to care of his health and nutrition.  

With Jack’s goals and athletic background in mind, he was matched with Rob, personal trainer and Fitness and Health Diploma holder. Rob’s background in sports, experience in injury rehabilitation, and holistic approach to fitness, combined with his charismatic training style, made him a perfect match for Jack’s journey.  

Rob began by determining Jack’s starting point through objective tests to understand his strengths and areas of improvement. He got to know Jack, why he’s here and what he wants to achieve. For Rob, fitness is about more than physical health – it’s about mental and emotional wellbeing too. By uncovering Jack’s motivation, his “why”, Rob could help him build a path towards success. When Jack walked into their first meeting, his initial goals were to feel better and build muscle mass. But as they talked, Jack realized he didn’t actually have a clear idea of what he wanted to achieve – he just knew he wanted to start taking steps toward a healthier lifestyle.  

The Program

After the initial assessment, Rob and Jack agreed on two overarching goals: build consistency and reduce pain. They also discussed more specific goals such as increasing Jack’s muscle size by performing resistance training targeted at muscle growth. “With this being Jack’s goal, we also needed to build his weak points”, mentions Rob. “Focusing on conditioning and smaller, more complex muscle groups, like rotator cuffs and grip strength, to boost his heavier compound lifts.”  

Before they started training, Jack had his own idea of what being consistent should look like – training hard five times a week with minimal rest.  

With his experience and holistic perspective, Rob reshaped Jack’s thinking. Rob created achievable goals for Jack that didn’t involve jumping from training zero times per week to five times per week. He started with what was realistic for Jack’s fitness level and lifestyle to make sure he didn’t burn out. Their initial training approach started with being consistent one time per week, with gradual progression from there.  

Reflecting, Jack mentions that he’s grateful for Rob’s thoughtful strategy. It not only made consistency achievable but also shifted Jack’s perspective on goal setting entirely. Jack acknowledges that Rob’s experience and insight helped Jack set clearer, more meaningful objectives. 

Throughout his program, Jack has valued the environment Rob creates – supportive, safe and motivating. “He’s not just a trainer; he’s a friend who genuinely cares about your progress,” Jack says. 

For example, Jack mentioned that when his knee pain from hockey flared up, Rob offered practical advice to manage it outside of their sessions. Jack is constantly impressed by the depth of knowledge Rob brings, something that sets Body + Soul Fitness apart from others, making all the difference.  

The Results

The biggest thing Jack has noticed is a change in his perspective. Since starting training with Rob, Jack mentions that his perspective of himself, and of what he wants out of the gym, has changed.  

He said he “wants to workout, wants to go to the gym, wants to set new goals, and that he’s invested in his health and fitness. He’s stronger, he’s more motivated, he’s energetic, his confidence has grown ten-fold, and he’s crushed his goal of consistency. When he started training with Rob they met once a week, and now they are training four times a week – setting and achieving new goals constantly. Not only has he become more consistent with his training regimen, but Rob has shared his expertise with Jack, expanding his understanding of nutrition, teaching him about functional and mobility training, and guiding him as he set goals. 

As Jack’s mindset changed and his commitment to his health grew, he started noticing physical changes too. Since beginning his training, Jack achieved an incredible milestone – losing 42 pounds! With Rob’s guidance, he turned weight loss into a goal he could actively control, combining training with healthy eating habits.  

As someone who came to Body + Soul Fitness pain and minor injuries, Jack stayed injury-free throughout his training journey with Rob. What once felt risky and overwhelming on his own became safe and empowering with Rob’s expert support, proving the value of having someone guide you along the way. 

Conclusion

Jack began his Body + Soul Fitness journey with a history in athletics and training but struggled with motivation and consistency. A narrative many of us are familiar with ourselves. Jack is an amazing representation that with a specialized training program, the expertise of a personal trainer and hard work, you can achieve anything you put your mind to. And this is just the beginning for Jack.  

Rob even mentions that Jack has recently taken up more sports. “Today, he has an appetite for many sports. He plays a ton of golf, rock climbs and hockey 3 times a week. He’s itching for more challenges.”
