At what age do you believe a child can start a resistance training program?
I have a feeling the answer will surprise you…a child can safely start resistance training as early as 5 years old. It is clear that differences in growth and maturation (as in height, weight, strength) emerges around 6-7 years old.
There is no minimum age requirement to participate in a resistance-training program but, all participants should have the fundamental competence too:
- Accept and follow instructions
- Understand the basic safety considerations
- Possess competent levels of balance and postural control
Another way to look at this question is, if children are ready to participate in organised sport then it should also mean they are ready to participate in a well prepared resistance training program. I have to make this clear, a resistance training program does not start with heavy loaded exercises but progresses from bodyweight exercises as skills are learned.
Conclusion
Youth resistance training programs can be started as young as 5-6 years old. As long as they are able to: Accept and follow instructions, understand the basic safety considerations, and possess competent levels of balance and postural control
